Common House Washing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

I'm Jeff — I've been washing houses around Wynnum, Manly, Tingalpa and Carindale for over 25 years, and in that time I've seen just about every way a house wash can go wrong. Almost all of it comes down to the same handful of mistakes.

Mistake #1: Too much pressure

This is the one that causes actual damage. High pressure strips paint, chews up render, and can force water in behind cladding where it has no business being. I only ever use low-pressure soft washing — slower to look at, but it's the only method that gets a house properly clean without hurting it.

Mistake #2: The wrong detergent

Bargain-bin cleaners and straight bleach will discolour paint and take your garden out along with the mould. I use a biodegradable, chlorine-based solution built for exactly this job — strong enough to kill mould and mildew, gentle enough that in 25 years I've never damaged a customer's plants with it.

Mistake #3: Not letting it sit

Rinsing the solution off too soon is one of the most common DIY mistakes. It needs a few minutes to actually break the mould and dirt down before you rinse — rush it and you've basically just hosed the house, not washed it. Doubly true in humid patches like Wynnum and Manly, where mould's already primed to come straight back.

Mistake #4: Washing on the wrong day

Full sun or a storm rolling in will ruin your results — one dries the solution before it's worked, the other rinses it straight off. I plan every job around the weather, not just the calendar.

Mistake #5: Skipping safety

Ladders, hoses, and mixing chemicals sound simple until something goes wrong. It's a big part of why people hire a professional instead of doing it themselves.
