House Wash vs Repainting – When a Clean Can Save You Thousands

Every second call I get starts the same way: "Jeff, I think we need to repaint." Nine times out of ten, they don't. What they're looking at isn't failed paint — it's years of oxidised dirt, salt off the bay, and mould sitting on top of paint that's actually still in decent shape underneath.

A soft wash strips all of that back off without touching the paint film itself — no brushes, no scrubbing, just the right chemical dwell time and a gentle rinse. I've had jobs where the owner swore the house had been repainted by the time I packed the hose up, and all I'd actually done was wash it.

The maths is simple: a full repaint on an average Brisbane home runs into the thousands once you add scaffolding, prep and labour. A wash is a fraction of that, and it buys your existing paint more years of life by getting rid of the grime and salt that break the coating down over time.

That's not to say washing replaces painting forever. If the paint's genuinely failed — cracking, peeling back to bare timber — no amount of washing fixes that, and I'll tell you straight if that's what I'm looking at rather than take your money for a wash that won't help. But for the "does this need a repaint" call I get most weeks, the answer is almost always: wash it first, see what's actually underneath, then decide.
